This Monday, Apple published a support page that could well be detrimental for many iPhone users.
If the new iPhones are a great success with customers, many are still using old models and, in particular, with old versions of iOS. While this is a bad idea in many ways, mainly from a security point of view, we have just learned that Apple plans to delete iCloud backups stored on very old devices.
Concretely, Apple explains that from December 18, “device backups will require iOS 9 or later [afin] to align more closely with our published minimum software requirements. Afterwards, your save data will be deleted unless you update to iOS 9 or later.”
Fortunately, the vast majority of iPhones still in circulation are capable of running iOS 9 or a newer version. However, this is not the case for iPhone 4 and older models. They will then have to carry out a manual backup, using a computer, to prevent potential loss of data. Other iPhones running iOS 9 or newer don’t have to worry.
