Inspired by the best-seller by French writer Bernard Werber, “The Ants” have invaded consoles and PCs since November 7 in a video game that combines exploration, contemplation and strategy. An astonishing adventure where the tiny becomes immense.

From the first minutes, “Les fourmis” impresses with its aesthetic. The player is thrust into a lush European forest where every detail is beautifully rendered, from the bark of the trees to the blades of grass. The mastery of lighting and the density of textures give this game an almost photo-realistic visual quality, day and night.

In terms of animations, the player discovers this environment by crawling along the ground at the height of an ant, moving everywhere until ending up upside down to climb along the branches, explore an abandoned plastic bottle or even go around the ‘a providential pear. This freedom of movement and the quality of the animations truly give the feeling of controlling an ant, light and agile.

Scenario mode: management and strategy

After a few introductory missions, the game reveals its strategic aspect. The scenario mode serves as an introduction to the mechanics: following pheromones to find disoriented workers, collecting wood and food or defending a nest attacked by termites.

Here, the player does not fight directly, but leads his troops like a general by managing the colony’s defenses and resources. This system is operated via an intuitive circular menu, perfectly designed for controllers. We use these options to fortify the nest, train troops, and create abilities to use temporarily in the middle of battle.

Multiplayer mode: cooperation or confrontation

Once the single-player campaign is completed, the game offers a multiplayer mode. You can compete one-on-one or in teams of up to three players, with the possibility of creating alliances.

The combat system is based on a simple principle: warriors, workers and artillery counterbalance each other like a game of rock-paper-scissors. This dynamic, supported by clear color codes, quickly becomes intuitive.

“The Ants” stands out for its simple, but effective approach. It takes an unusual theme and transforms it into an experience that is both accessible and engaging. Casual players will find something to suit them, as will strategy enthusiasts. This game stands out for its originality, its careful graphics and the richness of its universe.
