With a year’s delay to Huawei’s Mate XT, will Samsung’s tri-fold smartphone be better than its competitor? It could well have some great arguments to make when it is marketed around the world.

While foldable smartphones have carved out a comfortable place for themselves in a market where all devices look the same, it is time to welcome their inevitable evolution. Introduced by Huawei this year, tri-folding phones are shaping up to be the sector’s intriguing and innovative (and flawed) new fad.

Obviously, Samsung cannot afford to miss the mark. The Korean manufacturer has, in fact, made a reputation in the field of foldable smartphones by contributing to the relative democratization of this format. It would therefore be a question of not letting other manufacturers occupy this new niche.

As reported Frandroid at the end of October, the South Korean giant would be working on its own three-fold laptop to release it in 2025. Information recently confirmed by anonymous sources relayed by ET Newswho state that “ Samsung Electronics recently added a dual-folding foldable phone to its product lineup in development. »

Concretely, the design and specifications of the device should be decided by the end of November, and Samsung’s partners are already working on the subject.

A smartphone more durable than the Mate XT?

Obviously, we still know relatively little about this future Samsung model. We are currently talking about a device with a panel between 9 and 10 inches, or up to two inches more than the Galaxy Z Fold6.

This screen could also stand out from that of the Huawei Mate XT by having two inward folds, rather than one outward fold and the other inward. This would make it more resistant to everyday hazards while resolving potential reliability problems. But it remains to be seen if this would not make it thicker than its (for the moment) only competitor, transforming it into a real brick that is impractical to use when it is fully folded.

According to ET Newsthe stakes would be high for Samsung. The foldable smartphone format is now taken up by several other manufacturers, including Google and OnePlus with their Pixel 9 Pro Fold and OnePlus Open. Result: the competition is now well established, and the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6 no longer really stand out from the crowd.

Samsung must enter a new race where, this time, it is behind a major manufacturer. The Huawei Mate XT is not a poorly made smartphone, and it could very well find an audience outside of the Chinese market, where it remains confined for the moment.

This will be the main strength of the South Korean manufacturer, which will be able to more easily market its own iteration of the concept around the world. As long as Oppo, parent company of OnePlus, does not lose its pawn, a possibility noted byET News.
