THE MORNING LIST
Many people chose their email provider a long time ago, but haven't reconsidered since. However, over the years, this service has evolved – sometimes in the wrong direction – and user expectations have changed. Is it therefore advisable to change supplier? To get an idea of your options, here's a quick breakdown of five of the best free email services.
Google and Microsoft occupy the first two steps in this selection thanks to the functional richness of their free offers and the ancillary services that they offer free of charge (videoconferencing, office suite, diary, artificial intelligence, etc.). In addition, these services are a priori sustainable: the risk is low that they will close in the short or medium term. But the two large American groups poorly protect the privacy of their users, which gives the competition an opportunity.
Clair et riche : Outlook
Particularly comprehensive, Microsoft's free email box has the advantage of being relatively simple to use, compared to Gmail. Its interface is more streamlined, its icons are enhanced with color codes and accompanied by a small descriptive text, its email classification system is easier to understand.
This relative clarity does not prevent Outlook from being packed with advanced features similar to those of Gmail, such as rules allowing automatic sorting of emails or deep customization possibilities of the interface – the removal of buttons deemed unnecessary or adding an email preview pane, for example. In addition, Outlook offers practical little shortcuts allowing, among other things, to pin an important email to the top of the inbox or to schedule the sending of a message at a specific time.
For the resourceful: Gmail
Gmail's interface is more difficult to understand, but it offers more quick commands at the touch of a mouse, which more resourceful users will see as an advantage. With one click, you can, for example, classify a message in one of the three categories offered (follow-up/important/pending) or unsubscribe from a newsletter, which is not always followed by effect, unfortunately. In two clicks, you can make an email disappear until the evening or the next day. In addition, Gmail automatically classifies certain emails into several categories: social networks, notifications, forums, promotions. For the rest, like Outlook, Gmail is one of the most complete email services on the market.
