Available for free on the iPhone, Final Cut Camera should allow you to take full advantage of your device by offering professional video production tools.

Alongside the launch of the new version of Final Cut Pro for iPad 2 and Final Cut Pro for Mac 10.8, Apple has lifted the veil on its new Final Cut Camera application. Offered free on the App Store, Final Cut Camera actually complements Final Cut Pro for iPad 2. Because it is with this new application, which “allows you to take control of production thanks to intuitive professional controls”, that the New Live Multicam mode introduced in Final Cut Pro is supported.

An application to film like a pro

Concretely, Final Cut Camera can be used in two ways. The first, as a completely independent application. You can use Final Cut Camera to record your videos as you normally would, except that the application includes advanced settings. It allows, among other things, to film in different resolution ranges, with variable frame rates, and using different encodings. The application also allows, for example, to adjust the exposure, set the white balance, or even adapt the focus so that it follows the main subject during an action.

Please note, however, that certain features are restricted to the most recent iPhone models. You will need to have an iPhone 15 Pro or an iPhone 15 Pro Max to take advantage, for example, of the ProRes function, or to save the captured videos on an external storage device.

Also note that videos recorded with Final Cut Camera remain stored in the application’s internal browser and therefore do not automatically appear in Photos. You will have to proceed manually to transfer your rushes to your photo library.

The second way to use Final Cut Camera is by using the Live Multicam function. The application can in fact be launched simultaneously on several iPhones (up to four devices) to record and synchronize the shooting, from different angles, from Final Cut Pro for iPad. From the tablet used for production, you can remotely control and view the scenes captured by each of the devices connected to the Live Multicam.
