The adventure Baldur’s Gate 3 will soon come to an end. Following a launch with great fanfare last year, multiple Game of the Year awards and the publication of a physical deluxe edition, the RPG is preparing to receive its final consecration with a major update. Larian Studios revealed the outline of its seventh patch at the beginning of June. Like an ultimate “merci” to the community of loyal players, developers prepare official modding tools to facilitate the creation of personalized content. This announcement was then accompanied by a closed alpha for a few lucky modders, while a closed beta will begin in the coming weeks. As for the general deployment of these features, this will take place in September, at a date still unknown.

A new statement from the CEO of Larian and director of Baldur’s Gate 3 Sven Vincke – reported by our colleagues at GamesRadar+ following a BAFTA conference – also confirms that this addition will be the last.I think that’s when we’ll say: OK, now the game is completely yours” he explains. Asked about this purpose, Vincke presented it as a passing of the torch from developers to players. The developer also clarified that the tracking of the title will only concern “fixing critical bugs“. Almost all of the studio’s teams will therefore be able to tackle the development of the two new major projects previously teased by Larian.

Console players will be able to enjoy the mods…

…Under certain conditions. As detailed in Community Update #27, official modding tools will allow you to develop compatible content on console. An internal selection process will determine which mods can be made available to PlayStation and Xbox players. At the time of this writing, the eligibility criteria are still unknown, but will be published by the studio soon. However, he took care to specify that major changes applied to the story, level structure or other essential elements of gameplay will not be applicable on consoles “due to technical constraints and platform-specific guidelines. The list of requirements will help guide developers, but will not guarantee validation by Larian’s teams, which will be established on a case-by-case basis.

This cross-platform development nevertheless remains excellent news for console players who will not be entirely excluded from the community’s creative circle. Note that the creation of mods via official tools will also impose some restrictions on PC. In order to publish via the platform mod.io that Larian intends to use, certain script changes or so-called NSFW modifications (“not safe for work“, adult content) will not be eligible. Larian specifies that it will be possible to create these mods with the tools offered, but that they will have to be published via other services.
