Valve’s Steam client from November 2024 takes care of its mount under Linux

A new version of the Steam client is available from Valve. In addition to Windows and macOS, this version brings an impressive number of fixes and new features for Linux operating systems. Explanations.

What’s new in the November 2024 Valve client?

  • The Save Game feature on Steam is now available to everyone. The new system integrated into the interface allows you to record and share your gameplay sequences.
  • The wrapped version of the Chromium browser in Steam is moving to stable edition 126.0.6478.183.

Many new features of the Steam client directly concern GNU/Linux operating systems (as was already the case last September):

  1. Stability : several fixes have been added to avoid recurring crashes.
  2. Startup Improvements : Steam starts faster on some systems where slowness was caused by checking the hostname in loopback mode.
  3. Reactivity : Detection and management of commands for an already open Steam client is faster.
  4. Choice of execution environment : Developers can now select the Steam runtime environment for Linux to ensure better compatibility, like on the Steam Deck.
  5. Using X11 with Wayland : Steam can automatically switch back to X11 if necessary, even with Wayland configured.
  6. Removed option to disable Steam Play : Steam Play remains partially active on Linux for the proper functioning of the client, even without the visible option.
  7. Compatibility with Steam Play : The latest fixes for Steam Play now apply to third-party compatibility tools.

Important news for Windows and macOS : This version of the Steam client will no longer run on Windows 7 or Windows 8. You will also no longer be able to install it on macOS 10.13 or macOS 10.14.
