We have known for several months: Chrome on Android is working on a text-to-speech function. The web browser is now starting to offer a function that allows you to “ listen to a page», as spotted by our colleagues from 9to5Google.

Google Chrome will be able to read articles fromFrandroid

This new functionality seems to be available on many web pages and mainly those which contain a certain amount of text. When the page in question is loaded, a “Listen to this page» appears in the list of functions in the three-dot menu at the top right of the screen, between translation and updating to the home screen. A function that can be placed in the toolbar in Chrome settings.

When you click on it, a small audio player appears at the bottom of the page. It has a progress indicator, a play/pause button, a close button, and information about the page. A bar that is displayed even when you change tabs or if you lock the device (as long as Chrome remains the application in the foreground).

By clicking on this small window, you access a more complete menu. You can go forward or back ten seconds, change the reading speed, highlight or not the text and automatic scrolling. There is even something to change the voice, if you want a warmer, calm, serious tone, etc. If you don’t yet have access to reading pages in Chrome, check that the application is updated (Chrome 125 minimum).

If you still don’t have access to it, it should be effective in the coming weeks. Currently supported languages are Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, English, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. All the details regarding the function “Listen to this page» are detailed on a Google support page.
