This new Google Maps is useless, but you will love it

Imagine a world where you could personalize your car with just a click, or a swipe of your finger. Unfortunately, that day is not ready to arrive, but Google has decided to give us a glimpse of it with this little novelty, as useless as it is fun.

Most people don't know it, but the little blue arrow that indicates your position on Google Maps can be personalized. For 4 years, it has been possible to replace it with a red car, a yellow 4×4 or a green pickup. If the idea tempts you, the list of options is therefore very (very) limited.

Add a touch of fun to Google Maps

Good news, Google has decided to make a change in the next update. We should find, thanks to this update, no less than 5 vehicles with a much more elaborate design. Google should offer a sedan with a Bentley look, an SUV in the shape of a Jeep, and a pick-up quite similar to the electric Rivian. A sports coupe looks like a Roadster from Tesla. Finally, we should be able to choose a compact halfway between the Twingo and the Honda E.

But that's not all! Google decided to go further by allowing you to choose the color of your new car. In addition to the default Glacier white, you can choose between 7 other colors.

The choice is much greater than before!

If you too want to customize the appearance of Google Maps, here are the steps to follow:

  • Open Google Maps, then indicate the location you want to go to,
  • Once you have started navigation, you can click on the blue arrow which indicates your position (where the vehicle you have already chosen),
  • A menu opens with the different vehicle choices,
  • Once you have chosen your model, you can choose the color.

If new vehicles are not displayed, this is completely normal. For now, the update was only rolled out to a few phonesyou will therefore have to be patient. It also appears that iOS smartphones will be able to benefit from this update first. Indeed, the new icons were spotted on an iPhone 16 Pro Max, but not on Android smartphones.

This news comes in addition to the big changes that Google is planning for its navigation service, including the imminent arrival of Gemini. This should make it possible to improve navigation by making it even more intuitive and relevant.
