Little robot has become big

Unveiled during the recent PlayStation Showcase, Astro Bot marks the return to the forefront of Sony’s new little mascot. Previously appeared in 2018 in Astro Bot Rescue Mission – entirely in VR – and in Astro’s Playroom, a real technical demo of the PS5, the little robot signs here his first major title. A title on which the Asobi team – game developer – and Sony seem to be banking since Nicolas Doucet, director of the studio, recently revealed in interview for IGN that a free DLC is already planned.

This will focus on the provision of additional so-called “challenge” levels, shorter experiences focused on very specific challenges. Moreover, and if Doucet was careful not to talk about it, the two levels of this genre already present in the title are centered on the rescue of costumed robots like certain PlayStation characters. There is no doubt then that This DLC will bring more made-in Sony cameos not yet present in the base game. Since there is, apparently, already nearly 150 PlayStation celebrities ready to be discovered as robotsit is interesting to try to imagine which new kid could be in the spotlight.

Hunting for stars

Some players also hope to be able to go through levels entirely designed around the theme of said cameos. In fact, when we talk to him about Kratos and Atreus robots visible in the game trailer, Nicolet Doucet prefers to remain evasive. “Odin’s hammer and two ravens somehow betray him, but what happens inside this world is TBD” he explains before concluding with “please play it when it comes out”. Finally, he specifies that Sony “opened the doors wide” to all the characters that Team Asobi might want to include in the game.

Internal studios even seem to have sent various requests requesting the appearance of their favorite character in the title. In the demo presented during the Summer Game Fest, it was already possible to see Playstation stars, such as PaRappa and Lammy, Ratchet and Rivet, Jak and Dexter or even the traveler from Journey. Highly anticipated by PlayStation players, the title will not be playable in VR like its predecessor and will therefore be accessible to any PlayStation 5 owner and is expected for September 6.
