During an oceanographic expedition off the coast of Chile, a team of researchers captured never-before-seen images of an underwater creature that appears to come straight from another world.
This mysterious organism is a speciesspecies polychaete bioluminescentbioluminescent. These marine worms have protein structures in their bristles, called bristleswhich give them this iridescent shine. Next to the worm, we can observe brittle stars, a group ofechinodermsechinoderms close to the starsstars sea.
Never-before-seen images thanks to the highly productive underwater robot
This discovery was made thanks to the ROV SuBastianand robotrobot submarinesubmarine of 3.2 tonnes, which allowed scientists to Schmidt Ocean Institute to film creatures in deep waters.
The exploration of these waters allows us to better understand underwater ecosystems, invisible until recently, and to discover new species.
