Sony ULT Wear at the best price?

A neat helmet, pleasant to wear and durable

The Sony ULT Wear is a circum-aural headset that does not lack comfort or elegance, especially in its matte gray color. Wearing comfort is excellent, it does not exert pressure around the ears and the weight of the headset gives it fairly limited inertia. You can shake your head without worrying that the helmet will move too much or fall off. And unlike the XM5, this model is foldable and takes up relatively little space when stored in its semi-rigid case. In terms of controls, we have physical buttons on the left side, and on the right, a touch zone. It simply allows you to adjust the listening volume by successive vertical slides, as well as temporarily activate transparency mode to hear around you, by pressing the palm of your hand on the touch zone. It’s very useful.

One of its great qualities is its autonomy. On its ULT Wear, the Japanese firm announces 30 hours, with active noise reduction in operation. For our part, we measured 29:15 without low frequency reinforcement, in Bluetooth AAC connection with an iPhone at 50% volume. By deactivating ANC, the headphones would last up to 50 hours, according to Sony. A very good score which allows you to stay away from any electrical outlet or portable battery for at least a whole day. As for its charging time is around 3h30 with a 5W charger.

Good active noise reduction, but…

On the audio side, the Sony ULT Wear fails to offer balanced sound. It presses far too hard in the high bass, which casts a veil over all the other frequencies. Low frequencies lack speed and mid and high sounds are partially masked and it’s not pleasant. When listening to music, it systematically gets stuck; but for watching a series or an action film, or even playing a video game, the ULT Wear does better.

Fortunately, it offers good passive insulation and benefits from an active reduction system for surrounding noise. Overall, ANC manages to place the listener in a bubble calm enough to enjoy its music. It is quite close to the excellent Bose QuietComfort headphones. In the car, rolling noise is virtually eliminated at low speed and reduced enough to listen to music peacefully. In the street, intense and clear noises still come through, but when listening at high volume, the sound immersion is good.
