The next major version of Android could arrive sooner than expected. If we knew that Google had shaken up its update schedule, it would seem that the company has already agreed on a precise release date: June 3, 2025.
It’s a micro-revolution on the scale of Google. For the next version of Android, the web giant will accelerate its development schedule. As already explained CNET a few days ago, Android 16 should arrive during the second quarter of 2025, rather than at the start of the school year, as usual.
According to information obtained by Android Headlinesthe precise release date would even already be decided by Google. A source interviewed by our English-speaking colleagues states that the next major version of the operating system will be released on June 3, 2024. If the deadline has not been confirmed directly by Google, this is consistent with the information obtained so far.
More updates throughout the year
The early June window is indeed particularly strategic for Google. By making this new version of Android official before the summer, the web giant could push manufacturers who release mobiles at the start of the school year to directly adopt the latest version of Android. More specifically, this would allow the firm to fine-tune the stability and reliability of its system for a few months before the release of its Pixel phones, traditionally scheduled for September/October.
We would therefore move from a situation where the Pixel 9s receive a major update after their release to one where the Pixel 10s would directly benefit from a brand new and correctly optimized Android. A way to avoid bugs and other annoying problems that always accompany the release of a new OS.
But above all, this would allow the search giant to punctuate the year with a major update in June and another less ambitious one after the start of the school year, which could notably include improvements in artificial intelligence. Because yes, if you doubted it, obviously all of this has to do with the development of AI.
AI picks up the pace
As the head of Android development explained recently, “we are experiencing a unique moment that is causing us to completely reimagine what our smartphones can do and how we interact with them.» This reimagining can only be done at the frenetic pace of AI development according to Google, so the company is adopting its habits to those of the time.

Android 15: Google Pixel 6s became unusable after the update
The problem of tracking updates in the rest of the Android ecosystem (beyond Pixels) remains unresolved, even if Google has recently made efforts on the subject.
