iPadOS: Apple must comply with all obligations of European legislation

Apple must ensure that its tablet operating system, iPadOS, meets all obligations of the Digital Markets Regulation (DMA). In April 2024, the European Commission added iPadOS to the list of essential platform services for which Apple is designated as a gatekeeper.

Apple must, among other things, allow users to set the default web browser of their choice on iPadOS, allow other app stores on its operating system and allow accessory devices, such as headphones and smart pens , to efficiently access iPadOS features.

On November 1, Apple also released a compliance report detailing the steps taken to make iPadOS comply with the Digital Markets Regulations. The public version of the report is available online.

The Commission will now carefully examine whether the measures adopted for iPadOS will enable Apple to comply with the DMA obligations. The Commission’s assessment will also be based on contributions from interested stakeholders.

If the Commission concludes that Apple’s solutions do not comply with the DMA, it will take formal enforcement action, as provided for in the Regulation.
