The French ship more than 1.5 billion packages per year… sometimes with surprising packaging.

Can we really afford everything when it comes to parcel packaging?

TF1 is looking into the question.

“I just went to the relay point to collect my Vinted package, and look what they left it in!” If makeshift packaging from recycled containers has become the norm when it comes to selling second-hand items on the internet, certain finds sometimes stand out from the crowd. The latter often have the gift of calling out to the recipients of the package; or even irritate them. This is what a father recently testified on the Web after receiving a textile item intended for his child… in a bottle of milk. “I ordered pajamas for my son and look: they were put in a box of milk, the hood, it doesn’t even fit, conclusion, it has milk stains, it stinks, it’s horrible “, we hear him being offended in the TF1 report at the top of this article.

Pizza boxes, cake packages or even subtly folded trash bags… testimonies of improbable packages are multiplying with the rise of second-hand platforms between individuals.

“I don’t see what’s shocking”

And sometimes, it is the senders themselves who, far from being embarrassed, praise the advantages of this practice. Laura sends three to four packages per week and uses all types of packaging, such as a can of frozen salmon. Objective: save around ten euros of cardboard per week. “In any case, it’s going to end up in the trash, so as much as it’s used to wrap a package, I don’t see what’s shocking, especially since it’s totally clean inside,” she explains.

But can you really send a package in any packaging? We asked the question to one of the players in the sector. Pay attention to weight and packaging, as not all will necessarily be accepted. “It must be rigid and resistant to impact, there must be a flat surface for the label and if it is not suitable, we are obliged to refuse sending the package”, explains a sales consultant to our team.

Also note that if the package arrives damaged in the recipient’s mailbox due to its non-compliant packaging, the carrier is not obliged to reimburse the damage.

However, it is clear that these makeshift packaging are often less resistant. Thierry Capra, a florist who is also a relay point, sees this every day: out of the 300 daily packages, around forty arrive damaged.
