open headphones for added safety?

This is the argument that all new pairs of headphones or all new headsets insist on today: cutting the user off from the outside world. To do this, manufacturers use ANC technology (Active Noise Cancellation or, in French, active noise reduction) which allows ambient sounds to be filtered using integrated microphones which will transform this “noise” into an inverted sound wave ( anti noise).

However, some brands are now taking the opposite view of this movement by offering bone conduction headphones. These will free the ears from the waterproof tips that are inserted into the ear canal since everything happens outside. A format called open-ear that we had already been able to test on one occasion or another without really being convinced. Since it’s only fools who don’t change their minds, we repeat the experience with the Shokz Openfit, a more premium model in this category of headphones.

Alarming

Let us first start with an observation. One in six Belgians has already been confronted with a dangerous situation when traveling in traffic with earphones or headphones. A worrying and alarming figure when we know that a large part of the population now travels with this type of device. What’s more, by activating the noise reduction function which does not allow you to hear the traffic correctly.

“Open-ear systems do exactly the opposite,” assures Tina Lai, director of international marketing at Shokz. “They don’t block out ambient noise. Users continue to hear and are aware of what is happening around them. This means that they remain in contact with their environment and can immediately react in the event of change or danger. And this, while continuing to enjoy their own musical selections. In traffic, this clearly represents added value in terms of road safety. »

Pleasant and surprising

The numbers are there, it’s undeniable. The theory too since the basic promise, that of not obstructing ambient noise, actually offers more security than isolating headphones. But in reality what does it look like? Is this benefit obtained at the expense of quality and sound? It’s difficult to be able to clearly answer this question after testing the Shokz Openfit.

No, quality is not neglected by the American manufacturer. It’s even the opposite since “open” headphones are more comfortable to wear than their in-ear competitors. We will even tend to forget them thanks to their lightness (8.3 grams per earphone) and we have not had any problems with earphones moving, the “headset” remains in place since it follows the external shape from our ears. Another significant advantage is that we have a more hygienic product since only a small part of the headphones fits into the outer pavilion of our ears.

Yes, the sound quality is less advanced. An opinion that must nevertheless be qualified by explaining that the sound remains very good and is ultimately surprising for open headphones. You can really listen to his music in good quality. The only downside is that it is ultimately a speaker placed outside your ear canal (although with some pressure sent to the bones) which can be heard by others if you push the volume too high in certain areas. more closed. You don’t get the same quality as in-ear headphones but a passable alternative.

Notice

The Shokz Openfit are not aimed at all audiences. However, if you regularly walk or cycle around town or go shopping, these open headphones appear to be a safer solution while still offering good sound. The Shokz Openfit are truly premium and surprised us with the quality they exude in all aspects. And we finally understand the price, which is a little high (between 189 and 199 euros) but in line with what they offer.
