For some time now, Square Enix has unfortunately specialized in shutdowns. Unlike certain video game giants which are closing studios, the Japanese company is cutting off the servers of many games released on mobile media. Barely a year after the launch of this game from one of Square Enix’s greatest sagas, the adventure is already coming to an end!

A diversity strategy that didn’t pay off… Square Enix is reviewing its plans

These last few weeks have been quite eventful for Japanese publisher Square Enix, and we’re not saying that because the company has increased its video game releases in recent months. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Final Fantasy XIV on the Xbox ecosystem, SaGa Emerald Beyond, to recite nobody else but them. However, for the moment, the Japanese publisher’s release schedule is much less full than it has been recently, and this is none other than the consequence of a review of its commercial strategy. As Square Enix recently stated, it is now quality that prevails over quantity.

Effectively, Square Enix has decided to distance itself from smaller releases to focus on major titles, while trying to increase the visibility and reputation of certain already existing and well-established licenses. It is perhaps no coincidence that the Kingdom Hearts saga recently announced a release on Steam, three years after its arrival on the Epic Games Store. In any case, the Japanese company must now make up for it after having recorded more than 22 billion yen in financial losses. So, for that, Square Enix continues to clean up.

Released less than a year ago, this Dragon Quest game will close its doors very soon

In addition to the home console market, Square Enix has been particularly aggressive and present in the mobile media market since the 2010s. Some time ago, the list of mobile games offered by the publisher stretched on pages and pages… until the company turned into a real gravedigger! In less than two years, Square Enix has unfortunately built a huge cemetery ! Brief, the list sends shivers down your spine and it has recently been adorned with the name of a new victim.

Launched less than a year ago, mobile gaming Dragon Quest Champions will also close its doors. It was Square Enix which made the shutdown official, while specifying the closure date, set for next July 30 at 8 a.m. sharp. A sign that the end of the game is well and truly established: there is now no longer any way to acquire gems, the virtual currency used in the game. For those most involved since the release, Square Enix has announced that a functionality, called “Adventure Journal” would allow them to keep track of their activity. Although the Dragon Quest license is extremely popularand that the principle of the game is based on various game modes such as quests with turn-based combat, player versus player confrontations and even a battle royale feature, no license carried on mobile devices is safe from a sudden shutdown.
