Apple unveils new iPhone feature to combat motion sickness

Reading, or even looking at a smartphone screen for too long in a moving car, can make many people sick. If you’re one of them, good news: the iPhone will soon have a feature that should ease travel sickness.

Apple never stops thinking about its users and is full of inventions to make their lives easier on their smartphone, tablet or computer. Soon, a slew of new accessibility features will appear on the Apple brand’s devices: the tool Taptic Engine intended for the hearing impaired, theEye Tracking which will allow you to control the iPhone or iPad with your eyes, or even Vocal Shortcuts which will help people suffering from illnesses that affect speech to make themselves understood. But the one that interests us today is Vehicle Motion Cueswhich could well change the lives of those who suffer from motion sickness.

Vehicle Motion Cues: what exactly is it?

According to studies, motion sickness is linked to a sensory gap between what a person sees and what they feel. Over time, using a cell phone in a moving vehicle can become unpleasant, to the point of nausea. Fortunately, Apple seems to have found the solution to fix this: Vehicle Motion Cuesa feature which consists of making small black dots appear on the screen of the iPhone or iPad, which adapt according to the movements of the vehicle.

The Apple brand’s devices, being made up of different sensors, will in fact be able to detect if the car accelerates, slows down or turns, and then adjust the animation of these black points accordingly. More specifically, the latter will go in the opposite direction of the movement of the vehicle. It’s specifically seeing these blackheads going in the opposite direction that will (in theory) make any nausea-causing sensory issues during rides go away. Everything remains sufficiently discreet, so that it obviously does not disturb the reading or viewing of content on the iPhone or iPad in question.

If Apple does not specify it in its press release presenting all of these new accessibility features, we expect that Vehicle Motion Cues – and the others – arrives with the next major version of its famous mobile operating system: iOS 18. In addition, the Apple brand has already specified that this function can either be activated and deactivated manually via the Control Center, or be configured so that it is activated automatically as soon as it detects the movement of a car or any other means of transport.
