A historic leak hit Game Freak, the studio behind Pokémon, this weekend. We are talking about the multiple data that have surfaced on the web, such as the project around the tenth generation of Pokémon or the reasons for the end of Ash and Pikachu’s journey in the animated series. The leak is colossal and it is sometimes difficult to disentangle fact from fiction. Like the different stories that hang around Typhlosion and his predatory side. A very dark side for a Pokémon license… which has already been there for decades.
You will never see Typloqion the same way again
This is the big news of the weekend: Game Freak, the video game studio that created Pokémon, was the victim of a massive data loss. In addition to the employees affected, multiple files related to the first games, animated films and series, or even future projects of the studio are found on the Internet. Of course, among the most popular, we find the infirmations concerning the code name of the new Switch as well as the linked project to the tenth generation of Pokémon.
We also find texts on social networks, between two sprites of Pokémon from older generations. We find some half a dozen since the leaks that occurred this weekend and they all have one thing in common: that of displaying a much darker tone than that generally used in games. For example, we find the story of a Typhlosion who kidnaps a young girl and makes her pregnant. A tale quickly singled out for its gloomy side. Something that we find in another story, which depicts the massacre of a Parecool by a group of friends: the entourage of the missing Pokémon then takes revenge on one of the members of the group who meets a tragic end. .
Stories sometimes inspired by real folk tales
However, it should be remembered that, in the context of these leaks, the stories told above are not verified. Furthermore, it must also be emphasized that these maturely written stories are not new. Besides the description scary of some Pokémonsome stories to be found in the different games mention unfortunate events. At the Joliberges library, in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, we learn that Pokémon and humans once lived together. The Pokémon decided to no longer show themselves following a human eliminating and eating those in its path.
More recently, it was quest no. 82 of Pokémon Legends Arceus which recalled the closeness between humans and Pokémon. You set out in search of torn pages of a newspaper to discover the remains of an ancient hamlet. Once reconstituted, you can read this:
On February 5, I was caught in a snowstorm while returning to the hamlet. I found refuge in a mountain shelter, where I spent the night. At dawn, a noise woke me up… I then saw a… dressed in a kimono. » “Our eyes met. Her beauty… was breathtaking, but also frightening… to make my blood run cold. Taken with fear, I closed… my eyes, and waited for the… to go away. Opening my eyes, I saw only the snow… left by the… it had disappeared.
A quest which is the source of many questions within the Pokémon community but which leads to a consensus: the old man was said to have been married to the Momartik and fled when he discovered his wife’s true identity. This quest is a retelling of a Japanese myth known as Yuki-onna which talks about women bewitching men. Yuki-onna is a yokai, a type of supernatural entity that is part of many myths and legends in Japan. They are part of Japanese folklore! Game Freak then only transposes tales, which they have learned since childhood, into their video games by replacing the yokaïs with Pokémon. Something it wouldn’t be surprising to learn about the stories shared following the leaks. However, like Japanese tales and legends, they must be authentic.
