After years of abuse and toxicity, Activision may have finally found the solution to effectively combat bad player behavior.

An effective fight against toxicity

Call of Duty, like many popular online games, has suffered from toxicity for years. The fault lies with players with abusive behavior who tend to completely break down against their opponents, or towards their allies.

To combat this more than recurring problem, Activision has decided to set up a moderation system which monitors in-game messages, as well as player interventions in voice chat. This moderation service has been active since the end of last year and has since been strengthened with the help of ToxMod which analyzes players’ messages and voices using artificial intelligence. And the results are very convincing: since last June, Activision noted a 67% drop in toxicity in voice chat.

Since the rules governing voice chat were tightened in June 2024, Call of Duty has seen a 67% reduction in repeat offenses in voice chat across Modern Warfare III and Warzone. As of July 2024, 80% of players who have been warned since launch have not reoffended. Player exposure to disrupted voice chat continues to be reduced, dropping by 43% since January 2024.

Make love, not war

In short, Activision explains that thanks to strengthening moderation, Call of Duty offers players a healthier and less aggressive environment. The studio also notes the removal of “more than 45 million offensive messages since November 2023“, all in more than 20 languages. In this regard, Activision also specifies that voice chat moderation has so far only concerned Portuguese, Spanish and English. With the launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, the studio also plans to extend its moderation system to French and German. Players will therefore be required to respect each other when the game launches on October 25.
