Updating an old box, Devialet on the brink and Google making our smartphones even more secure — The tech news of the week

Ups and downs this week in tech with an update to Nvidia’s old Shield , Devialet on the brink and an anti-theft function from Google. Here is the recap of the week.

Maintenance record chez Nvidia

Released 9 years ago, the Shield TV is the antithesis of planned obsolescence. Nvidia is today offering a new update for its connected box. And it’s not just a security patch since we are also entitled to improvements including a better frame rate.

Launched in 2015, the Shield TV benefits from all the power of the Tegra X1 which has allowed it to go through the years without running out of steam. On mine, it was the remote control battery that finally gave out…

French high fidelity is faltering

Flagship of French industry, Devialet is in bad shape. The company would seek new financing to avoid going under, explains Challenges in its columns.

Born in 2007, Devialet must deal today with markets that have become increasingly competitive, both for speakers and headphones. Partnerships have allowed it to keep its head above water in recent years, notably with Huawei, but that no longer seems to be enough.

Google blinde les smartphones Android

Google is introducing three new features to Android to combat phone theft.

  1. Theft protection : This feature automatically locks the phone if a sudden movement, typical of a snatching, is detected by the accelerometer.
  2. Offline lock : The phone locks after being offline for a period of time, preventing thieves from making it unreachable via airplane mode.
  3. Simplified remote locking : It is now possible to lock your phone remotely via the linked phone number, instead of the Google account.

These features are deployed on phones from Android 10. To check their availability, follow this path: Google > All Services > Device Security > Theft Protection.
