The more the competition advances, the less room amateur pastry chefs have to make mistakes. In The Best Pastry Chef on M6, this Thursday, October 31, 2024, Mercotte was particularly on the lookout for the slightest error… And one of them attracted the wrath of Cyril Lignac's sidekick.
The new season of Best pastry chef on M6 promises to be full of surprises and innovations. This thirteenth edition is marked by bold changes that spice up the famous pastry competition, starting with the introduction a unique trophy: the golden cupcake, awarded to candidates who stand out for their creativity or technical mastery. Another major novelty this year, the technical test, traditionally led by Mercotteis now under the responsibility of pastry chefs. Since the broadcast of the show on October 10, certain candidates have stood out. Thimothée and José were the first to receive the blue apron. But the competition advances and the ranks close… For the moment, four candidates have already left the adventure: Aurélie, Céline, Laetitia, and Dorothée.
This Thursday, October 31, while the whole of France celebrated Halloween, the theme imposed for this evening's events was… Japan! A choice that sparked varied reactions among viewerswith some regretting the absence of a scarier theme on this special evening. Despite this gap, the amateur pastry chefs have redoubled their creativity to surprise Cyril and Mercotte with desserts inspired by the land of the Rising Sun.
“We’ve already told you three or four times.”
The creativity test thus saw the birth of surprising trompe-l'oeil: ramen, sushi, and makis revisited as pastry treats, as well as cakes with Japanese colors and flavors. Jennifer, one of the candidates, chose to impress the jury with a tub of kawaii ice creamrevisited in the form of a chiffon cake with yuzu, a Japanese citrus fruit. But during the tasting, the jury noted a few points for improvement: Cyril Lignac appreciated the conceptbut regretted the addition of dark chocolate, which he said didn't quite fit the universe “kawaii”.
During this same tasting, Mercotte did not hide his irritation at a technique deemed imperfect by the famous culinary critic. When Jennifer explained her yuzu ganache, composed in particular of mascarpone, Mercotte rolled his eyes to the sky and did not mince his words: “You don't put mascarpone in a ganache, it's heresy! We've already told you three or four times. Once we say it, correct it!” she said, visibly exasperated. Then she said: “It makes me worship that, I’m worshipped.” His passionate reaction made the other participants burst out laughing and even Cyril, who tried to calm the mood while continuing the tasting.
