One of the most interesting new features of the Apple iPhone 16 is undoubtedly also one of the most discreet. Recently converted to the benefits of repairability, Apple has equipped its mobiles with an “electric adhesive” which allows the battery to be changed easily, without having to flood the phone with solvent.

Where most manufacturers use very basic glue to secure the battery to the phone’s chassis, Apple now uses an adhesive that comes off using a simple electric current. For anyone who has ever tried to change a cell phone battery with isopropyl alcohol, plastic spatulas and a lot of frustration, this is a small miracle.

Dr Frankenstein you smartphone

To make the operation easier for Sunday DIYers, iFixit has just marketed an accessory dedicated to the iPhone 16, which makes the operation as easy as pie. The VoltClip is a simple pair of alligator clips similar to those used for car batteries, but in a smaller format, connectable to a USB-C charger.

Once the clips hook into the battery tab, simply plug everything into a USB-C Power Delivery charger and wait a few minutes to effortlessly pop out the battery. The accessory can also be used with an external battery to play Dr. Frankenstein on your smartphone, wherever you are.

A simple squeeze of juice and the battery can be removed without any problem.

If you’ve ever used jumper cables on your car, the process for disassembling the iPhone 16 battery is surprisingly similar. iFixit also touts the versatility of its tool, capable of powering a number of other electrical and electronic accessories, as long as you know what you’re doing – but don’t try it on a car.

The accessory is compatible with any 9 or 12 V power source, which includes a good bunch of phone chargers, including this one from Apple. To be as comprehensive as possible, iFixit has even made available a complete guide showing step by step where to connect the clamps and how to remove the battery from the iPhone 16.

Alternative solutions in DIY stores

Don’t worry, if you already have a pair of mini alligator clips with a 9V battery adapter, you don’t even need the iFixit tool. The EU is indeed keeping an eye on things and Apple would have been kicked in the face if the iPhone had been equipped with a battery that could not be dismantled “with basic tools”as provided for in the new Brussels regulations.

Unfortunately, the tool is not yet available on the French iFixit store, and the American platform does not ensure deliveries in mainland . Hopefully she will correct this soon. In the meantime, if you need to change the battery of your brand new iPhone 16, clip connectors for electronic equipment can be found in all good DIY stores.
