Windows 11 24H2 has a size problem

Microsoft’s latest major operating system update isn’t without bugs. The latest concerns an issue in the update cache that takes up storage, but cannot be deleted.

Despite several months of testing with Insiders, it only took Windows 11 24H2 a few days for the first problems and other bugs to be reported by first-time users. After causing BSOD issues due to an audio driver, the 24H2 update now appears to have a problem in Windows Update cache management.

Windows Update cache cannot be purged

The concern raised by WindowsLatestconcerns the Windows Update cache. After applying the 24H2 update, Windows Update generates a cache of 8.63 GB. The only problem is that deleting this cache is, a priori, impossible with the temporary file cleaning utility in Windows Settings . No more than with the operating system’s Disk Cleanup utility.

Even after using either tool, the Windows Update cache does not purge and continues to occupy 8.63 GB of storage. Even if you try to delete it manually from the system directory that contains it, the Windows Update cache remains present on the machine.

A known Microsoft bug

The problem is far from isolated. Many users have reported the same issue in the Windows Feedback Hub for several days.

« Windows Update cleanup files are not deleted. There are 8.63 GB of unused temporary files remaining. I did a clean install and ran Windows Update, then ran Temporary File Cleanup » indicated last Friday, a user victim of this bug. “ If I want to delete temporary files and I checked “Windows Update Cleanup” and then click delete the number of gigabytes remains the same for “Windows Updte Cleanup”. I have already restarted my PC by disabling fast startup options » rails another on the Microsoft Comments Hub.

Once verified, on our two test machines, deleting the Windows Update cache was also impossible, regardless of the utility used in Windows.

Asked by WindowsLatest regarding this problem, Microsoft, which indicated that it was aware of the situation, also explained that it was working on a corrective patch which will be deployed in a future update. Obviously, the problem would be due to the new update system deployed by Microsoft in Windows 11 24H2. Concretely, this update is considered by the OS as a famous operating system checkpoint and is therefore identified as being necessary by the system for the application of future updates. The cleaning utility is therefore unable to delete them.
