A major IPTV network dismantled

An IPTV network illegally rebroadcast content from Netflix, Sky, DAZN and Mediaset. In total, four men were arrested. Investigators succeeded in this dismantling thanks to the payment of certain subscribers to this illegal service.

As reported Torrent Freak, Italian authorities have managed to dismantle a major IPTV network, located in Lecce, in the south of Italy. This network, described by the police as a “sophisticated fraud system”, illegally broadcast content from Sky, DAZN, Netflix and Mediaset.

Investigators managed to dismantle this network using payment methods from certain customers. Indeed, some subscribers to this illegal service paid via Postepay prepaid payment cards (this payment method is offered by the Italian Post Office which is managed by the Ministry of Economy and Finance).

However, Postepay prepaid cards must be registered to a name and accompanied by a telephone number. It is precisely this mode of operation that allowed investigators to trace the managers of this illegal IPTV network.

In total, four men were arrested and charged with hacking and money laundering. Even if the prices of this illegal IPTV service were aligned with the market, investigators estimated that the profits were more than 500,000 euros. These funds had been partly reinvested in assets in order to camouflage illegal activities. The court also ordered the preventive seizure of five real estate properties and two vehicles, including a vintage one.

This case reminds us that Italy takes the subject of illegal IPTV very seriously. Recently, we learned that some Italian users of illegal IPTV were going to receive fines of up to 5,000 euros.
