SPACE – The Sun… on fire. NASA captured images of the most powerful solar flare recorded since 2017 on Thursday, October 3. As you can see in the video at the top of the articleour star released an impressive energy on its surface… right in front of our planet.

The eruption was classified as category X9, with the letter “X” corresponding to the most intense class of eruptions. As BFMTV reminds us, the most powerful solar flare recorded since the beginning of the 21st century took place in April 2003, and classified in category X28, the sensors having been unable to operate beyond that.

A coronal mass heading towards Earth

This high-intensity geomagnetic storm released a cloud of plasma – also called coronal mass – which headed towards our planet. A phenomenon that could delight astronomy enthusiasts since such particles can cause the appearance of northern lights in our sky.

According to the Science Alert website, this type of eruption should occur more and more frequently in the coming months, as the Sun approaches the peak of activity of its solar cycle (11 years), expected in July 2025.
