Historically, predictions converged around the fact that the iPhone 16 would be the first model to feature the new facial recognition function (Face ID) under the screen. However, according to recent and consistent information between several sources, the probability of seeing this technology on the iPhone 16 is now almost zero. Thus, Ross Young, an analyst renowned for the precision of his predictions concerning screens, had previously relied on the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models to inaugurate Face ID under the screen accompanied by a hole camera. However, its latest statements postpone this innovation until 2026, according to information relayed by the Apple Insider site.

Thus, the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max models would be the first to integrate this technology, while the standard models would be equipped with it the following year, i.e. in 2027.

Dynamic Island still relevant for the next two generations of iPhone

For this year and next year’s models, Apple will reportedly continue to use Dynamic Island technology, first introduced with the iPhone 14 Pro. This choice symbolizes a cautious approach on Apple’s part. Indeed, the Apple brand does not want to offer on the market a technology which it is not absolutely certain will be effective enough to be adopted. In addition, remember that the Face ID function still concerns user recognition and information security, a crucial area today. It would therefore not be a question of proposing a system which has the slightest flaw.

Towards a camera under the screen

Under-screen camera technology is a reality today, and even for a few years now, but it is not yet considered sufficiently interesting and relevant in terms of quality for many observers. It can be found in particular on the most recent smartphones from the ZTE brand, a pioneer in this technology, as well as on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 folding smartphone, for example. For Apple, beyond 2026, it would be a matter of adopting this under-panel camera technology, which will be developed by LG Innotek.
Note that the under-screen front camera represents a more difficult technical challenge than the under-screen Face ID feature, which is why the latter technology will be rolled out first.
Apple has already rejected an under-screen camera prototype from a supplier, not being satisfied with the results.
