Software development is a complex art to master. Samsung provided proof of this very recently with an update which caused many mobiles to crash. As detailed Android Authorityit seems that many users’ Galaxy S10 and Note 10 have been brought to their knees by a stupid application update. It also seems that the Galaxy A51 is affected.

If Samsung has not yet officially spoken on the subject, the feedback on Reddit seems almost unanimous to point to an update of SmartThings, Samsung’s home automation management application.

Variants of the S10 and Note 10 also affected

Deployed on October 2, 2024, version 2.2.02.11 of the application could create severe problems on the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10, but not only that. All variants of these mobiles also seem affected, namely the S10e, S10 Plus and Note 10 Plus. Some reports also report problems with the Galaxy M51.

After installing the application update, many mobiles find themselves stuck at startup with no option to access its data. Similar stories seem to come from all four corners of the globe, with not seeming to be spared. The only solution at the moment seems to be to return to factory settings via “recovery” mode.

To do this, press the On + volume up + Bixby buttons for a few long seconds until yellow and blue text appears on the screen. With the volume keys, then select “Wipe data / factory reset» and let your phone spin. Unfortunately, this will erase all your data.

If your phone doesn’t have the SmartThings update installed yet and you want to be careful, turn off Samsung automatic updates. Go to the app Settingschoose the menu “Applications» then search for and select the entry “Galaxy Store“. From this window, go to “Galaxy Store Settings» and set the option “Auto-update apps” to “Never”. This should prevent the new version of SmartThings from automatically installing.

If you have a spare phone, you can also wait a few days to see if Samsung can resolve the situation. In any case, this incident somewhat tarnishes the reputation of the Korean manufacturer which does not seem to pay much attention to software bugs on its “vieux» devices (the Note 10 and S10 were released in 2019). An unfortunate problem given that the company has recently committed itself to software longevity.
