Obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, fatty liver disease… The increase in the number of people affected by cardiometabolic diseases around the world is becoming a public health concern.

Worse, with the aging of the population, many people suffer from several pathologies, what we call cardiometabolic multimorbidity.

« People with a single cardiometabolic disease may have twice the risk of all-cause mortality compared to those without it », Explain scientists from Soochow University (Taiwan).

« And those with cardiometabolic multimorbidity may have an almost 4 to 7 times higher risk of all-cause mortality.. »

The emphasis should therefore be placed on prevention in order to prevent these diseases from developing. While numerous studies have revealed the protective effects of coffee, tea, and caffeine consumption on the morbidity of single cardiometabolic diseases, the potential effects of these beverages on the development of multiple pathologies were largely unknown.

A set of benefits

To fill this gap, Taiwanese researchers relied on the UK Biobank, a large study of diet and health data from more than 500,000 participants aged 37 to 73.

Result : ” coffee and caffeine consumption (decafs therefore do not count, editor’s note) at all levels was inversely associated with the risk of developing cardiometabolic multimorbidity. »

Precisely, ” consuming three cups of coffee, or 200 to 300 mg of caffeine per day, could help reduce this risk ».

If the authors do not specify the nature of the protective effects of coffee, a complete review of its benefits, carried out last July, revealed “ a complex interplay of antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, lipid modulatory, insulin-sensitizing effects… These mechanisms collectively contribute to reducing the risk of a spectrum of adverse cardiometabolic effects, including hypertension, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality ».
