We know that Apple is preparing the launch of a new device that wants to be the central point of the smart home ecosystem. Codenamed “J490”, this mysterious accessory, provisionally known as “HomeAccessory”, would combine the functionality of an iPad, Apple TV and HomePodaccording to the latest leaks. Beyond that, we know little. Or rather, we knew little, as new details begin to emerge about how it works and its characteristics.
A design centered on Apple Intelligence
One of the elements that most attracts the attention of the HomeAccessory is its design, which stands out from the typical rectangular format that we usually see on devices like the iPad. In its current version, according to 9to5mac, the device has a square format screen. It is not yet clear whether this design will be kept in the final version or whether Apple will opt for a more traditional solution, but this choice, at least, attracts attention.
As far as we know, this new device will be equipped with the A18 chip, which suggests that it will have remarkable performance, especially when it comes to artificial intelligence. Something that is not present in current HomePods and that, without a doubt, will guarantee that the device is capable of handling multiple tasks simultaneously, such as running apps, playing media, and controlling devices of the house.
Another key feature of this device is its built-in camera, which will allow video calls via FaceTime and other compatible apps. Moreover, the HomeAccessory camera has the ability to identify gestures remotelywhich opens the door to new forms of interaction without needing to touch or speak to the device.
According to the leaked information, the camera will also allow the device to recognize the people in front of it, which will allow personalized requests, as is already the case with HomePods, which can differentiate the voices of different members of the hearth.
Finally, it was discovered that The HomeAccessory will be able to run apps standalone, just like the Apple TVand it will also work as an AirPlay receiver, which will allow us to send content from other Apple devices to view or listen to it on the new device. Additionally, it appears that the device will include a customizable lock screen with multiple clock styles, similar to those that were added to the Apple TV interface with the update to tvOS 18.
