Brussels consults on future sustainability criteria for laptops
Descriptive text here

On April 25, the European Commission opened two consultations concerning the improvement of the energy efficiency criteria of laptop computers: the first on the ecodesign criteria, (1) the second on the energy label (2). In fact, these two consultations refer to one and the same questionnaire (3), the two subjects being linked.

This work is based on the ongoing review of European regulations on ecodesign. The Commission recalls that in the future its assessment will take better account of the durability, reliability, reparability and recyclability of products. These two consultations are open until July 18.

This work should lead to the adoption of new regulations which will follow on from the 2013 regulation which sets the ecodesign requirements applicable to computers. Brussels intends to see these procedures concluded in the fourth quarter of 2025.

Beyond energy efficiency stricto sensus, the Commission plans to take these new elements into account: durability and solidity; the possibilities of dismantling and repair; availability of priority spare parts; the availability of information useful to users, repairers and recyclers; the availability of operating system updates; sound missions; the durability or accessibility of batteries; and protection against the most common causes of significant damage or total loss.
