US box office: The Fall Guy takes the lead ahead of the revenant Star Wars: The Phantom Menace

The Fall Guy with Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt takes the lead at the US box office while Star Wars: The Phantom Menace comes back almost 25 years later.

Like many other films, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace returned to cinemas, almost 25 years after its original release in October 1999. And for its American weekend, episode I of the cult science fiction saga was still released took second place at the box office with more than $8 million in revenue.

Before him, we find The Fall Guythe adaptation of the series The Man Who Fallen about the adventures of a stuntman directed by David Leitch (Bullet Train). With approximately $28.5 million in revenue, the film starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt topped the US rankings for its first weekend of release, but will it really be enough for your budget?

The Fall Guy, first without blowing everything up

Indeed, if David Leitch’s latest feature film got off to a fairly honest start, we must also keep in mind that it benefited from a budget of 130 million dollars. So of course, The Fall Guy would have achieved the third best launch in the United States for a film starring Ryan Gosling after barbie ($162 million in revenue) and Blade Runner 2049 (almost $33 million), but its first results necessarily represent a disappointment given its cost.

It remains to be seen what will happen to The Fall Guy in the coming weeks, but it is obvious that he will have to pass the second to hope to reimburse his budget. The film will also need to be a big international success to compensate for this little disillusionment across the Atlantic.

The famous Guy:

Concerning the rest of the top 5 of the American box office, the podium would be completed by Challengers and its 7.6 million dollars in revenue. Suffering from a 49.1% drop in attendance for its second week, Luca Guadagnino’s love triangle still has a long way to go to get back up to its $55 million budget.

The much criticized The Cards of Evil would still have reached fourth place for its startup with $6.5 million in revenue, while Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire would still be in the top five with its sixth weekend and its $4.5 million, bringing its total in the United States to more than $188 million in revenue.

“Eyes on the prize…maybe?”

Finally, the release of Planet of the Apes: The New Kingdom next May 10 in the United States (and from May 8 in France) will surely shake up the box office quite a bit, the Wes Ball film is likely to take first place for a while. Nothing very reassuring for The Fall Guy
