Available since Monday evening, the latest version of the iPad software is causing major problems for the latest models.

Apple could probably have done without this bad publicity to praise the merits of its latest ultra high-end tablet! However, the Californian brand announces that it is closing the tap of the update to iPadPro 18 on the iPad Pro M4 until further notice. But what exactly is going on?

“Bricked” devices

There are some good surprises, like the fact that the new iPhone 16s won’t cost any more than last year’s models. And then there are the bad ones. The kind that render the iPad completely unusable after installing the latest available update.

This is clearly the lot of several users of the latest iPad Pro M4 who, since Monday, have been complaining online that their tablet simply no longer wants to turn back on after an attempt to upgrade to iPadOS 18. One of them says he took his device to an Apple Store, where he was confirmed that his product was out of service. In his case, he was not even able to benefit from the extended Apple Care coverage and must wait to get the opinion of Apple engineers to get a replacement tablet.

According to the specialist site Ars Technica, the latest iPads have the unfortunate tendency to go into Recovery mode if the slightest error is detected during an update. In the meantime, Apple is taking drastic measures.

iPad Pro M4s deprived of update

After a few days of delay, Apple today confirmed to Engadget that the latest M4 iPad Pros can no longer attempt to install iPadOS 18 until the issue is permanently resolved.

“We have temporarily pulled the iPadOS 18 update for M4 iPad Pros and are working to resolve the issue that is affecting a small number of devices.”

It’s not uncommon for an update to bring bugs or cause parts of a device to malfunction. Still, rendering a tablet completely unusable, especially the flagship of a brand, is rather rare – if not unprecedented. No such issues have been reported on iPhones and Macs, which have been able to be updated to iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia since last Monday.

We bet that if the problem is indeed software-related, affected users will be able to get help from an Apple Store once the source of the bug has been identified.
