Electronic Arts has announced that a film based on its popular simulation game will soon go into production. The Simsin collaboration with Amazon.

From the computer screen to the big screen. On the eve of their 25th birthday, The Sims will move from the virtual world to the real world. The film that will be dedicated to them in any case. During its “Investor Day”, Electronic Arts notably returned to the future of its star franchise. These are multiple projects that will come to animate the road to 25 years next year, including test phases for players around elements of the next The Sims 5.

And among all those awaiting players who are fans of the famous life simulation, there will be a film.

“We’ve had this idea of making a film for many years,” Kate Gorman, general manager of the franchise, admits to Tech&Co. The Sims, although she admits that the idea this time didn’t come from EA. “It’s the culmination of so many people’s desires. We’re very excited to get started on it.”

On the side of Electronic Arts and the Maxis studio, behind the game with 500 million players – all episodes and variations counted – and billions of hours of play for the 4th episode alone, we recognize that we are only at the beginning of the project, “a multi-year project”. Clearly, we will have to wait a few years before seeing it arrive on our screens.

It will be done in partnership with Amazon MGM Studios, the production company born in 2021 from the merger of the two entities (Manchester by the Sea, Orion).

Making a film with and for enthusiasts

This film based on The Sims will be directed by Kate Herron (Loki)who also wrote the screenplay with Briony Redman, screenwriter of Doctor Who. “They are two players and two fans of the Sims. It was important for us moving forward,” adds Kate Gorman. “We wanted to work with people who had the same passion for The Sims that we can build something that our community would love too.”

The creative teams of Sims will be involved in the production and will work closely throughout the process. This will ensure that the film, whose subject and form have not yet been revealed, will remain in the spirit of play and the management of small beings.

“We have signed some really great teams and we are very proud of them because we know they are going to bring an incredible experience to the film,” adds the franchise manager about LuckyChap Entertainment, the company co-founded by Margot Robbie, and Vertigo Entertainment, which is co-producing. “Everyone has a role to play and I’m sure it will be to do the best possible thing, and to make it as ‘ape-like’ as possible.”

And when asked how virtual Sims will become real, the answer could have been given in Simlish, the incomprehensible language of the game’s characters. “If you can dream, maybe it will look like your dreams,” Kate Gorman jokes. “But I can’t confirm anything at the moment about the film or its form. We’ll have to wait a while.”
