Samsung Galaxy A55 5G test: without madness, but with excellent autonomy

For its photo part, Samsung has chosen to equip its Galaxy A55 5G with the same trio as its predecessor. We therefore find a main sensor of 50 Mpx with wide-angle optics (f/1.8), an ultra-wide-angle (f/2.2) of 12 Mpx and a macro module (sensor of 5 Mpx) clearly anecdotal.

Compared to the Pixel 7a, we note a lack of contrast in daytime photos. Although the colors appear slightly saturated, we nevertheless appreciate the fine details. The algorithms seem to easily detect elements that deserve to be specified, such as the characters on tarot cards or the characters on the cover of the book. On the other hand, there is a tendency to allow digital noise to appear, as is the case with the Galaxy S24 series.

If Samsung had already improved its low light performance on the previous model, it is clear that efforts have once again been made. The software processing still forces the smoothing of the image in order to erase noise, but we notice better detail management and a slightly less natural colorimetry than its competitor.

50 MP mode

By default, the Samsung Galaxy A55 5G delivers wide-angle shots in 12.5 Mpx thanks to pixel-binning which brings together 4 pixels in 1. Very easily accessible in the smartphone photo app, the 50 Mpx mode uses all of the photosites of the main sensor, which allows significant cropping without loss of quality. However, this move to full definition does not bring any significant gain. The processing seems quite similar, as does the colorimetry.

Ultra wide-angle module: 12 Mpx, f/2.2

During the day, the Galaxy A55 5G cannot match its rival at ultra wide angle. The sharpness is in fact much lower than with Google’s camera phone. There is also a tendency towards overexposure and the camera has difficulty avoiding image distortion, counterbalanced by a little cropping.

Night shots are even more difficult to use than those of the Google model, and suffer from omnipresent smoothing which fails to eliminate noise, as well as desaturated colors.

Front module, portrait and video mode

On the front, the Samsung Galaxy A55 5G is equipped, as on the previous generation, with a 32 Mpx sensor. This delivers detailed and correctly exposed shots. If by default, portrait mode seems a little exaggerated, it is always possible to adjust it after taking the photo. On the video side, the device is capable of filming up to 4K at 30 fps with satisfactory results and well-managed stabilization.
