It was at the beginning of this European Championship summer in Stuttgart that Gregor Kobel felt how hearts could beat faster. After the national team’s only public training session in the Waldau stadium, he remained alone in the wide open spaces to fulfill the autograph requests of the young onlookers. Perhaps Kobel simply wanted to show his friendly side in the city where he had been promoted with the local VfB in June 2020 and where his star had really risen. In any case, the action is symbolic of what representative tasks may follow in the future. For him, who beamed like a cockchafer when coach Murat Yakin announced at some point after the tournament: “You are now my new number 1.”
