A 13-year-old girl is said to have drilled open a patient’s skull at the University Hospital in Graz. The man’s lawyer has now made the allegations. The regional “Kleine Zeitung” was the first to report on this.

The child’s presence in the operating room had already been reported in June, and now the new details are causing people to shake their heads. According to them, it was an emergency operation – and the girl not only watched, but even reached for the instruments herself.

«Like a piece of meat»

According to the “Kleine Zeitung”, a 33-year-old man was seriously injured during forestry work at the beginning of the year and was flown to hospital by emergency helicopter. According to his lawyer, the operation went well. The hole, which was necessary from a medical point of view, was also drilled correctly.

Nevertheless, the ORF quoted the lawyer as saying that the procedure should be considered serious bodily harm. His client had lain on the operating table “like a piece of meat” and had been operated on “without his consent by a 13-year-old who is not licensed to do so.”

Lawyer wants to enforce compensation

The entire surgical team will be held criminally responsible. Under civil law, the victim is entitled to compensation for pain and suffering.

According to ORF, a spokesman for the public prosecutor’s office said that the police are continuing to investigate the case. The questioning of the accused is currently still pending. They are waiting for the final report from the criminal investigation department.

The hospital company Kages has neither denied nor confirmed the allegation that the 13-year-old used the drill herself. The 13-year-old’s mother, a neurosurgeon, and another doctor were fired. Kages has now announced, according to ORF, that warnings have been issued to the rest of the surgical team. Further consequences are possible depending on the outcome of the investigation.
