The fact is: After Mick Schumacher experienced two difficult years at Haas with few points but with many accidents, Haas and Steiner threw him out the door. Instead, the team brought Nico Hülkenberg back from early retirement. At the time, he had been without a permanent seat in Formula 1 for almost three years.

Steiner assures that he was not interested in explicitly pushing Schumacher out of the team. He also doesn’t want to let the accusation of not adequately supporting his former protégé stand.

“It will be difficult for him to find a place”

But he admits that the pairing of Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin at the time was not ideal for anyone. With two rookies, Haas paid a lot of money for accidents and damage in 2021. The two pilots couldn’t learn anything from each other. Haas remained without a point the entire year.

It would have been much better for Schumacher to have an experienced driver as a colleague. This way he could have received valuable information and help. But about the double rookie signing from 2021, Steiner says: “I did what I had to do.”
