In many federal states it is now the autumn holidays or they start next week. Off over the Alps and into the sun? Not a good idea. At the moment, our holiday destinations south of the Alps are exposed to the ex-Hurricane Kirk and lows, which not only bring powerful squalls with them, but also rain, rain, rain.

In Piancavallo, east of the Dolomites, an incredible 357 liters of rain were measured within 24 hours. That’s about half of Berlin’s annual rainfall. But torrential quantities of 250 liters were also recorded in Liguria, not far from Genoa. There were other measuring points in the border area to Slovenia that reported three-digit values.

Floods, mudslides and blocked roads are currently being reported in Rossiglione in Liguria. Milan and Genoa are also struggling with the floodwaters. Northern Italy is really taking a beating at the moment.

Drizzle and squalls in Mallorca

The former Hurricane Kirk – it was a so-called fish storm because it did not reach land, but only raged over the Atlantic – has now united with Deep Gerda and is bringing storms to the Iberian Peninsula and soon, in a weaker form, to us.

The storm made landfall in the north of Spain and moves from the Bay of Biscay via to the German southwest, bringing hurricane-force winds and lots of rain. Ex-Kirk will be felt today from northern Portugal across Spain to the middle of France, with squalls, sometimes even hurricane-force winds, which occur particularly in hilly and mountainous areas as well as on the coasts.

On Thursday night, the storm will move from central France to our southwest, with some severe gusts of wind. In the mountains, hurricane gusts of up to 140 or 150 km/h are possible.

7-day weather trend: Over 20 degrees with rain and the first autumn storm

Once again the focus of the precipitation forecasts is – in addition to some intense rain in the west of our country – including the north of Italy as far as Slovenia. Here, some weather models have forecasts of another 100 to 200 liters per square meter until the weekend. Maximum estimates even go up to around 300 liters per square meter in some places. The situation therefore remains very tense and even life-threatening!
