Press release of October 8, 2024

The department is on ORANGE “rain-flood” alert since 3:00 a.m. this morning until 2:00 p.m.

The department is also on YELLOW “thunderstorm” alert from 2:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.

Description and evolution of the weather event:

The meteorological episode began in the west of the PACA region with 10-20 mm of cumulative precipitation so far.

In the Alpes-Maritimes, weather conditions will deteriorate around 7-8 a.m. with increased rain:

• On the coast: accumulations of 40-60 mm of rain are expected in a short time (2-3 hours) between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. The possibility of stationary storm cells is unlikely at this time, reducing the risk over urbanized coastal areas.

However, since storm cells can be intense over a short period, they are subject to monitoring supported by State services. An accumulation of 60-70 mm is expected over the entire episode.

• In Mercantour: total accumulations of 70 to 100mm are expected. Storm activity is less intense than on the coast but precipitation will be regular throughout the episode.

The wind will not be significant with gusts of 70-80 km/h at most. Hail is possible locally (0.5mm/1cm in diameter).

No river overflow is currently observed.

Emergency services activity:

• At this time, no intervention by the emergency services related to the weather conditions has been reported.

Measures :

As a reminder, the Prefect of Alpes-Maritimes yesterday took the decision to close nurseries, schools, middle schools and high schools throughout the department for the entire day of Tuesday October 8, 2024.

The Prefect calls on everyone to be extremely vigilant this morning and to keep themselves informed of developments in the situation before considering any travel.

Behavioral tips:

• Limit your movements and take shelter

• Do not under any circumstances, on foot or by car, enter a submerged path.

• Move away from watercourses and reach a high point

• Do not go down into basements

• Secure your belongings likely to be damaged

• Monitor rising water levels

• Take shelter in a solid building
