Iran has launched a missile attack on Israel, according to the Israeli army. The armed forces announced this on the online platform X. Rocket alarms were triggered throughout Israel.
Israeli media reported that more than 100 rockets were fired at Israel. According to the dpa news agency, strong explosions were heard in Tel Aviv. Reuters also reported explosions heard in Jerusalem. It was unclear whether these came from impacts on the ground or interceptor missiles in the air. Citing witnesses, the agency also reported intercepted missiles over Jordanian airspace.
After the rocket attacks began, Israel closed its airspace. Incoming flights would be diverted to airports outside the country, the airport authority said.
Missile alerts were sounded across the country and people were urged to seek shelter.
Iranian The Revolutionary Guard warn of retaliation
After the attacks began, Iranian state television broadcast a statement from the Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRGC). It said dozens of rockets had been fired at Israel. If Israel retaliates, Tehran’s reaction will be “even more devastating and ruinous.”
The army had recently called on people in Israel to prepare for a “large-scale” Iranian attack and to stay close to shelters. The USA had also warned of an “imminent” attack from Iran. Such a direct attack would have serious consequences for Iran, it is said.
The White House said US President Joe Biden had ordered the US military to shoot down Iranian missiles aimed at Israel. Biden and his Vice President Kamala Harris would be informed about the current situation by his crisis team in the Situation Room.
Already in April there was an attack from Iran
In April, the IRGC carried out a direct attack on Israel for the first time in the history of the Islamic Republic. The IRGC air force fired more than 300 drones, rockets and cruise missiles at their arch-enemy. The attack was successfully repelled. Iran was reacting to the killing of high-ranking generals who were killed in a suspected Israeli attack in Syria.
