Broadway star Gavin Creel has succumbed to cancer. He was only 48 years old. Theater colleagues like Bette Midler are dismayed.

Gavin Creel, a Tony-winning Broadway star whose credits include “Hair,” “Hello, Dolly” and “Into the Woods,” died Monday at his home in Manhattan of complications from aggressive cancer — “a “metastatic malignant peripheral nerve sheath sarcoma,” as his spokesman confirmed to the “New York Times.” He was 48 years old.

As “Variety” further reports, Creel won his first Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical in 2017 for the role of Cornelius Hackl in the Broadway revival of “Hello, Dolly” with Bette Midler, 78. Before that, he was in 2009 for “Hair ” and was nominated for “Thoroughly Modern Millie” in 2002. He also won a 2023 Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album for the Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim’s “Into the Woods.” Creel made his television debut in 2003’s “Eloise at the Plaza” and has also appeared in “American Horror Stories” and more.

Following the shocking news, Gavin Creel received an outpouring of messages of love and heartbreaking tributes. His “Hello, Dolly!” co-star Bette Midler led the condolences, writing on Instagram: “The radiant actor Gavin Creel, beloved by the Broadway community, has died of a rare form of cancer.” She added: “He played Cornelius Hackl to my Dolly in ‘Hello Dolly’ and I looked forward to working with him every night. Midler was followed by stars like Hannah Waddingham (50, “Ted Lasso”), Idina Menzel (53, “Frozen”), Lin-Manuel Miranda (44, “Hamilton”), Bernadette Peters (76, “Annie”) and many others Stage and film greats.
