The hero of San Marino was not even born when his country won its first victory

Nicko Sensoli has written his name in the history of his country’s football. Unknown to the general public, this 19-year-old midfielder gave San Marino victory on Thursday evening, at home, during a first day in the Nations League, against Liechtenstein (1-0) in League D.

The 210th and last nation in the Fifa rankings had not won a match since April 28, 2004. Nicko Sensoli was born on June 14, 2005 and had therefore not seen a San Marino victory in his lifetime. Four of his teammates, present on the pitch on Thursday, were also not born during this first San Marino victory.

Revenge in Liechtenstein on November 18

San Marino had already beaten Liechtenstein in 2004, by the same score (1-0). Since then, the selection of this micro-state landlocked in the west of Italy (old Republic with nearly 34,000 inhabitants) remained on a series of 140 matches without success (22 goals scored).

At the final whistle, Nicko Sensoli and his compatriots logically celebrated this victory as it should be. A next meeting in the League of Nations, on October 10 on the Gibraltar pitch, is already checked for a potential new exploit of the “Biancoarruzzi”, the nickname given to the San Marino players.

On November 18, Liechtenstein will have the opportunity to take revenge in a return match in the Nations League. The country ranked 199th in the Fifa rankings has been waiting for a victory since 2020, when it dominated Luxembourg.
