INTERVIEW – Islamism remains “a taboo” in France for the doctor of anthropology, who points the finger at the responsibility of a section of the media.

Florence Bergeaud-Blackler is a doctor in anthropology and a research fellow at the CNRS. In 2023, she published Freemasonry and its networks, the investigation (Odile Jacob).


LE FIGARO. – How would you define imams like the one at Les Bleuets in Marseille? ?
Florence BERGEAUD-BLACKLER. – I would speak of Brotherhood-Salafism. These imams or preachers of the second and now third generation were originally trained by the Muslim Brotherhood, who themselves came from the “bled” to study or do business in France. Then the Saudi pietist Salafist wave arrived, via Algeria, and challenged the “hypocrisy” of the Brotherhood (themselves Tunisian and Moroccan for the most part), judged too calculating, too politically engaged to the detriment of piety.

The Salafist Brotherhood members like the Imam of Les Bleuets are politicized figures with a commitment and a societal project that is therefore Brotherhood, but whose ethics involve rigorous Salafist practice.
