The Chicago Bears’ search for their head coach is reportedly over.
Team management is on the verge of reaching an agreement with Ben Johnson, according to what informant Tom Pelissero has learned.
Johnson would thus leave his position as offensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions, a position he has held since 2022, to join a division rival as pilot of the Bears.
Johnson and the Lions were surprised by the Washington Commanders on Saturday, in their first playoff game, after a magical season of 15 wins against two losses.
Under Johnson’s leadership this season, the Lions’ offense was the most productive in the NFL in terms of points (564) as well as in terms of touchdowns scored (68).
Johnson produced as much from the ground game with Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery (with 29 rushing touchdowns) as from Jared Goff’s aerial attack (with 39 majors). He is also recognized for his creative side, with the numerous trick plays made by the Lions offense during the campaign. He had precisely ordered this against his future employers.
-The Bears began the Caleb Williams era with a 5-12 record, which placed the team in last place in its division.
Williams was nevertheless able to complete more than 350 passes for gains of more than 3,500 yards, in addition to completing 20 touchdown passes against only six interceptions.
Last November, the Bears fired Matt Eberflus the day after a loss, precisely against the Lions.
