“I often wanted to give up”: 2nd in the Vendée Globe, Yoann Richomme confides on LCI

Navigator Yoann Richomme was the guest of LCI this Sunday morning.

The French skipper (Paprec Arkéa) came second in the Vendée Globe in 65 days 18 hours 10 minutes 2 seconds.

He talks about “the hard times” he experienced during this race.

Dauphin, but with great weather. French skipper Yoann Richomme (Paprec Arkéa) came second in the Vendée Globe in 65 days 18 hours 10 minutes 2 seconds. The 41-year-old sailor from sets the second best time in history. Yoann Richomme, who took part in his first solo and unassisted sailing trip around the world, finished “very proud” this 10th edition of the Vendée Globe, Wednesday January 15 in Sables-d’Olonne, less than a day behind the winner Charlie Dalin (Macif Prévoyance Santé).

If he experienced a “incredible adventure”Yoann Richomme however also experienced “hard times”as he explained this Sunday morning on LCI. “I often wanted to give up”he told our antenna. “The hardest part is the times when the boat is going very, very fast for a long time, particularly in the South Atlantic where for a week or ten days the boat is sailing at full speed”he explained. “There it’s mentally tough: the machine is launched by itself, we’re on autopilot, the boat goes very fast, it bounces on waves 24 hours a day”said Yoann Richomme.

“If we fall in the water, it’s over”

The navigator also explained that if, during the race, he was not always tied up, he did, however, “was obliged” to slow down the boat when going on deck because it is “very dangerous”. Security measures are particularly reinforced “in the middle of the Atlantic”to the extent that the skippers are “almost ten days from saving the first lands”he indicated. “So if we fall in the water, it’s over.” To avoid taking these risks, navigators are therefore more attached during this passage.
