MLB: The Blue Jays are seriously discussing with Pete Alonso

The Pete Alonso saga is intensifying and the Toronto Blue Jays are engaged in discussions with his camp, according to Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic.

Rosenthal and Sammon write that the Jays are one of three teams vying for the free agent and that discussions with his agents have reached a crisis point.

According to The Athletic, If the Jays were to sign Alonso, they would still prefer to keep Vladimir Guerrero at first base. Wednesday, Andy Martino of CUT reported that the New York Mets had “verified” Guerrero’s availability, but added that the Jays would be unlikely to trade him. The Mets then agreed to a one-year, $8 million contract with outfielder Jesse Winker on Thursday.

Jon Heyman you New York Post reported this morning that the Mets are more seriously exploring other options rather than a return to Alonso’s Queens.

Heyman said he also believes a trade for Guerrero this winter would not happen since Blue Jays management aspires to be competitive in 2025. Guerrero is expected to become a free agent after next season. Heyman added that the team does not want to negotiate a possible extension once practice begins.

Rosenthal and Sammon point out that Guerrero played 12 games at third base last season and could potentially split time at designated hitter with Alonso if he were signed. The Mets still want to bring back Alonso, who spent his entire six-year Major League Baseball career in New York, but a financial disagreement continues to exist between the two parties.

Alonso, 30, has averages of .240/.329/.459 with 34 homers and 88 RBIs in 162 games in 2024.

Besides Alonso, the Blue Jays are reportedly interested in starter Roki Sasaki, who continues to listen to offers from teams. The Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres would also be in the running.

Sasaki had a 2.35 ERA with 129 strikeouts in 111.0 innings last season for the Chiba Lotte Mariners in Japan.
