Qivitoq in Greenlandic culture

In Greenland culture, the qivitoq is a person who retires to live far from humans in the Arctic mountains, or in a cave. Legend has it that those who practice it acquire a capacity for survival that brings them closer to animal behavior. Some also say that he becomes an immortal ghostly entity.
Furthermore, “Qivitoq” is a Danish film by Erik Balling, made in 1956 and which mixes documentary and fiction. It was selected at the Film Festival in 1957.
