Hockey: sale of Brantford Bulldogs to Hyman family confirmed

A group led by Edmonton Oilers forward Zach Hyman and his family has purchased the Brantford Bulldogs of the Ontario Junior Hockey League.

The OHL confirmed Monday that the Board of Governors had approved the sale of the team owned by Ottawa Senators principal owner Michael Andlauer to a group that included Hyman, his brother Spencer and their father Stuart.

The Bulldogs, who returned to the OHL in Brantford last season after leaving in 1984, continue to draw crowds to the Civic Center and are trying to reach a long-term deal with the Ontario municipality in hopes of possibly build a new amphitheater there.

Andlauer, who also owns the Belleville Senators of the American Hockey League, purchased the Belleville Bulls in 2015 and moved them to Hamilton, where they were renamed the Bulldogs.

The team announced it was moving to Brantford for at least three seasons heading into the 2023-24 campaign due to renovations at the FirstOntario Center in Hamilton. It was the first time Brantford hosted an OHL team since the Alexanders moved to Hamilton in 1984.

The Bulldogs won the OHL title in 2018 and 2022, under Andlauer. The team entered Monday ranked sixth in the Eastern Conference, with a 21-15-4 record.
