Soccer Canada has reportedly chosen former San Diego Wave head coach Casey Stoney as the new head coach of its women’s national team, according to several media reports.
Canada, sixth in the world, has been without a permanent head coach since Bev Priestman was sent home during the Paris Olympics this summer over a spying scandal involving drone.
Priestman, his deputy Jasmine Mander and analyst Joey Lombardi are serving one-year suspensions from FIFA for their roles in the scandal. Soccer Canada has cut ties with the three people.
A Soccer Canada spokesperson briefly responded to the numerous reports regarding Stoney’s hiring, saying only that “the search is ongoing and is being done confidentially.” We are not going to comment on the veracity of rumors. When there is news to report, you will hear it directly from us.”
Stoney, 42, was the Wave’s first head coach when it joined the NWSL in 2021. She was named coach of the year in 2022.

She nevertheless helped the Wave win two trophies, the NWSL Shield in 2023 and the Challenge Cup in 2024. The team compiled a record of 24-15-18 under her command in the regular season.
Stoney had previously been head coach of Manchester United women’s club. As a player, she notably played 130 matches as a full-back for England.
Assistant coach Andy Spence led the Canadian team for the remainder of the Olympics. Cindy Tye, coach of the under-20 team, led the national team on an interim basis in recent matches against Iceland and South Korea.
